Video backgrounds

Hi - I may be stretching the technology here but there is something odd about the way videos perform as a background unless I am doing something wrong.

I had the bright idea to use it to add subtitles to a video. So I created a "song" with the subtitles on multiple slides, pushed down to the bottom of each. Then I dropped the video onto it in the schedule and saved it.

It works perfectly the first time but if you stop it part way through (as we don't want the end part of the video) and later want to show it again then sometimes the video will start part way through even if you have made the item "Go live" again. The slides start from the beginning but the video does not.

I'm not sure I fully understand what you're doing. Are you setting the video as a background or foreground element? Are you going live with something else in between or is this song still live when you Go Live to it again?

This may be all wrong but what I did was create a "song" containing the video subtitles in lower thirds. Then I dropped a video onto it in the schedule. Now what I can do is go live with the song and move forward the slides in time with the dialogue manually. It works most of the time but during testing, probably because I had stopped part way through the previous time, it starts part way through the video. I can attach the item if that helps. Is there a better way without using dedicated captioning software?

If you can attach a packed schedule file with the song in it that would be helpful. It sounds like you're saying the subtitles is a lower thirds video that you're adding as a foreground element and another video as the background to the 'song'?

What you may just need to do is either go live with something else between your testing and the live service, or you can edit the song and go to inspector and click on Slide and make sure the box is checked to always start slide from beginning.

No - you are thinking much more complicated than it actually is. The song is just plain text. I wouldn't know how to create a video like you describe. It is too big to attach so I have put it on GD.

Ah, you said " was create a "song" containing the video subtitles in lower thirds" so I thought it was a video.

I will take a look at it. It's asking for permission to access it. I sent the request

Ok, so it's just lower quarter text with a video background. Since it's not possible to stop a background video while you're live to it, unless you press the Black button on the toolbar, how are you stopping the video part way through?

We stop it using the black or logo button. I spotted the problem while testing which is what I would do in the run up to a service so it was in fact only a few slides into the story. What I then found varied in such a way that I couldn't understand. Clearly continuing by removing the black carried on where it left off as expected. Hitting "Go Live" again on the same item didn't reset it to the start. Sometimes, it seemed, even projecting a different (non video) item next and then going back to this one it sometimes started part way through. It is as if the previous part run was held in buffer which was not getting reset using Go Live.

It also seems to move on beyond the start if it has been running in preview (and I can't see a way to stop it).

Because you have it set as a background, you have no player control of the video. It will play in loop until you go live to something else. If you press the black or logo buttons, it will pause, but will start where it left off when you turn black or logo off. If you go live to something with a different background, when you go live to this song again, it will start from the beginning. If you go live to something with the same background, it will not start over, it will just continue playing. So, it seems as though it's doing as expected the way you have it set up.

There really isn't a way to do what you want to do other than going live to something else with a different background or an image or other video before you go live to that song again so it will start at the beginning. But you have to have it set as a background so the video doesn't restart on every slide.

Hi - thanks, yes, I thought I was probably doing something wrong. I will have a look at putting it into the foreground as you suggest. An education for me.

Sorry, I had to edit my last reply. A foreground wouldn't work because it would restart on each slide. It has to be set as a background. You'll just have to go live to something else before you go live to the song again so it will start at the beginning.
